ASQ InfVoices – Quality Ambitious in HKSQ and ANQ

The last topic of ASQ Influence Voices in 2014 was raised by Mr. Bill Troy question “Is Quality Ambitious Enough?”. He also advised us to keep the following two questions in mind:
- How do we encourage those who work in quality to understand their own value?
- How do we spread the message of quality in a marketplace overflowing with ideas about how to boost profitability and ever-changing management trends?
Then he mentioned ASQ’s mission “To increase the use and impact of quality in response to the diverse needs of the world.” and expressed his idea of ASQ mission to be more ambitious such as “To improve the function and value of goods and services worldwide, and to facilitate the development of new products and services that improve the quality of life.”

That let me thinking about HKSQ mission that “To promote greater awareness of the need for quality in Hong Kong for ensuring product and service excellence through continuous improvement of quality and customer satisfaction, and to provide continuing education to professionals involved in the quality and reliability disciplines.” Since all HKSQ executive committee members are voluntary and we haven’t full time staff, HKSQ can only run under extreme lean approach to provide our service. However, I can say we are the most active quality society in Hong Kong. Eventhough we have only limited resource included human resource and money, we could provide many activities included seminars, visits, workshops at least once per month, 3 times of newsletter per year and AGM gathering, as well as, Student Project Competition. Our new leaflet graphic showed that HKSQ as a key to open different quality aspects from Hong Kong to China, Asia and the World. It seems to enhance our Ambitious and our new slogan is “Quality and Innovation Today, Success Tomorrow”. Comparison on the resource between HKSQ and ASQ, I think HKSQ is enough ambitious at this moment.

However, I appreciated another ambitious organization named Asian Network for Quality (ANQ) which is consisting of all non-profit organizations in Asia that seek to improve quality of human life by contributing to the progress of science and technology; and to the development of industry through promotional activities for the research and development of philosophy, theory, methodology and application in the field of quality and quality management.

The following diagram showed the ANQ Way.
ANQ Way: Various regions of Asia form Asian Network for Quality with the Goal of contributing to creativity, integration, prosperity and quality of human life in Asia through the Strategy based on constancy of purpose, knowledge creation, voluntary spirit and system approach to improvement; living the Asian Way of harmony in diversity, mutual respect and austerity; following Core Values based on honesty, flexibility and self-control.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2UW7VawmGI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C_3LqTNVgI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHUNwcYPOWM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppx0KGUJDNA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iv9SeBsDMZI

Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTPC) has recognized as Outstanding Organization with Comprehensive Management Systems by Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA) in their 25th Anniversary Recognition Program on 28 Nov 2014. Ir. Dr. The Hon WK Lo (Chairman of HKQAA) presented the award to Mr. Kevin Edmunds (Senior Manager, Sustainability Development) and I (Manager, Quality System).

The trophy is showed below.

I would like to share my 10 years ISO Journey in Science Park since Dec 2003. At that time, I was consultant (The first one man SOHO consultant achieved HKQAA ISO 9001 certification with cert. no: CC2286 in 2002.) and provided service to Science Park. Then, I have joined Science Park as Manager (Quality System) since Jan 2007. Quality related works in Science Park are summarized below.

ISO 9001 – Quality Management System (QMS)
I started my project in Science Park since Dec 2003 to assist Product Analysis Laboratory (PAL) (previous name of IC Failure Analysis Laboratory (ICFAL) and Material Analysis Laboratory (MAL)) to achieve ISO 9001. At that time, the laboratory was less than 10 people. After that the scope extended to IC Development Support Centre (ICDSC) (included Probe & Test Development Centre (PTDC) and Reliability Laboratory (RL)), and to IC Design Centre (ICDC) in May 2004. The scope extended continuously including Solid State Lighting Laboratory (SSLL) (previous name of Photonic Development Testing Centre (PDTC)) in Mar 2005, IP Serving Centre (IPSC) in Nov 2006, Wireless Communications Test Laboratory (WCTL) in Jul 2007, PV Testing Laboratory (PVTL) and Biotechnology Support Laboratory (BSL) in Jun 2009. So that the whole Technology Support Centre (TSC), included all laboratories, achieved ISO 9001 QMS with about 45 engineers in 2009.
In 2008, top management would like to extend ISO 9001 QMS from Laboratory to whole corporation. First, we performed a corporate-wide exercise to define a unique code for all documentation in the HKSTPC and started the Corp ISO project in 2009. I re-activated our electronic documentation management system (eDMS) to fulfill the document control requirements. The first stage was to extend the ISO 9001 from Laboratory to my division named Business Development and Technology Support (BDTS) which included TSC, Incubation Program and Industry & University Collaboration (IUC) and completed in Mar 2010. Moreover, our team got the performance recognition on 13 May 2010. Then, I was in-charge the Corp ISO 9001 project to assist different divisions to complete the ISO 9001 certification included Project & Facilities (P&F) in Dec 2011, Publicity & Communication (P&C) in Mar 2011, Finance & Corporation Service (F&CS), HR, IT & IA in Mar 2012, and Marketing & Sale (M&S) in Feb 2012. Finally, we achieved Corporation ISO 9001 certificate in Mar 2012.

ISO/IEC 17025 – Quality Management System for Laboratories
I had developed a test method named “Test Method for Measurement of Thickness of Metallic Coatings by Measurement of Cross-section with a Scanning Electron Microscope” which based on ASTM B748-90 (Reapproved 2010) for IC Failure Analysis Laboratory (ICFAL) and achieved ISO/IEC 17025 under Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (HOKLAS) since Sep 2005. The same method had extended to Material Analysis Laboratory for HOKLAS accreditation in Jun 2011. The other method I developed was “Determination of delamination using scanning acoustic microscope after preconditioning in accordance with IPC/JEDEC J-STD-020D” and accredited in Jun 2008. In addition, I got the best paper award in ANQ Congress 2014 and my paper entitled “Investigation on the Measurement Uncertainty of Scanning Electron & Acoustic Microscopy under HOKLAS scheme”. On the other hand, I worked with WCTL team to seek China National Accreditation Service (CNAS) accreditation for 3GPP pre-conformance test in Aug 2010 and then our team got performance recognition for CNAS on 16 Feb 2011.

ISO/IEC 27001 – Information Security Management System (ISMS)
Since ICDC and IPSC handled customer’s semiconductor design and IP, top management decided to implement Information Security Management System in ICDC & IPSC first. I developed the ISO/IEC 27001 ISMS and InfoSec FMEA for risk assessment in ICDC & IPSC which have certified by HKQAA since Feb 2008. Then we extended and upgraded ISO/IEC 27001 from version 2005 to version 2013 to the whole TSC in Dec 2014. Our team members got the performance recognition on 5 Aug 2008. Moreover, I wrote a paper named “Integration of Quality Management System and Information Security Management System - HKSTP implementation case” for ANQ Congress 2009 and got the best paper award.

OHSAS 18001 – Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS)
Both Quality and Safety are important in our laboratories; therefore, we have implemented and certified OHSAS 18001 OHSMS in TSC by HKQAA since Mar 2009. Our team also obtained performance recognition on 30 July 2009. After that the whole corporation has been extended to achieve OHSAS 18001 certification in Mar 2011. I had joined the Safety & Health Poster Design Competition (Workplace) and got Bronze Award on 5 Dec 2012.

ISO 14001 – Environmental Management System (EMS)
Safety Health & Environmental (SHE) team led corporation and our team led laboratories to implement EMS and achieved the ISO 14001 certification in Mar 2013.

ISO 50001 – Energy Management System (EnMS)
P&F team led the ISO 50001 EnMS implementation in the building of Bio-Informatics Centre and achieved the first ISO 50001 Energy Management System certification in Hong Kong by SGS in Jun 2011. The certificate presentation was arranged in the 2nd Occupational Safety and Health Conference in Science Park on 26 October 2011.

ESG Seminar – e-Business Strategy

The 1st Executive Study Group (ESG) seminar in 2015 with January Topic of e-Business Strategy named “How Burberry & Starbucks Innovate Superb ‘Customer Experiences’ Digitally” was held by the ESG, Asia Pacific Institute for Strategy Limited (APIFS) and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corp (HKSTPC) on 7 Jan 2015. I would like to summarize the seminar for sharing below.

Before the seminar, Dr. Mark Lee briefed the 6th anniversary of Executive Study Group (ESG) and discussed how to improve sales performance. He quoted Prof. Philip Kotler (Kellogg School of Management Northwestern University) statement that “When Sales and Marketing work well together, companies see substantial improvement on important performance metrics: Sales cycles are shorter, market-entry costs go down, and the cost of sales is lower.”

Then we tried the online survey to examine how well Sales and Marketing Work Together using mobile. We got the immediately result and report would sent to our email.

After that Dr. Mark Lee briefed the content of seminar included "The Heart of e-Business Strategy”, “360 Customer Experience Strategy”, “DNA Inside Great Strategy” which included “Touch Points”, “Reach-and-Engagement”, “Customer Data-Mining” and “Physical-and-Digital-World Integration”, as well as, “Cross-Industry Sharing”.

The Heart of e-Business Strategy had started since 2007. Because iPhone launched and transforming the Customer Experience. New Customer Experience were possible from Social Media, Mobile Computing, GPS data and Customer Analytics.

Dr. Lee briefed the 360 Customer Experience Strategy using Burberry Case. Ms. Angela Ahrendts (CEO, Burberry in 2014 and working for 6yr) identified some factors why Burberry behind competitor included Lack of Innovation, Strong Competitor and Lack of Economies of Scales.

Then she asked two questions that “What is our vision?” and “What do we have that our peers don’t?” (Differentiation Strategy) Then she found the unique positions to target Millennial Consumers and used Millennial’s Mother Tongue “Digital”! Once the digital strategic set, they focused on Digital Marketing, led by Millennial and invested uncommon budget allocation (said >50%). For instance, revamping Burberry.com used eleven languages, New Product Sampling at Facebook, Online request for Global Shipments, and Top Management appeared on YouTube & Facebook, as well as, to be the first to see the New Collections at Tweeter.

There were Four Strategies Inside 360 Customer Experience included (1) Touch Point Strategy, (2) Reach-and-Engagement Strategy, (3) Customer Data-Mining Strategy and (4) Physical-and-Digital-World Integration Strategy.

(1) Touch Point Strategy
Burberry employed this strategy in Fashion Show such as Autumn/Winter 2015 show including Chinese actress and model Angelababy. They teamed up fans with WeChat, Weixin in Chinese to offer an immersive fashion experience for fans (Fans Strategy). The following slide showed that it allowed followers to customize a digital “Made For” plaque with their name! The other case was Burberry Kisses.
“The experience has to be what our customers want it to be.” Said by Gary Loveman (CEO, Caesars Entertainment)

(2) Reach-and-Engagement Strategy
Starbucks was employed as case for discussing Reach-and-Engagement Strategy. Mr. Adam Brotman (Chief Digital Officer, Starbucks) digital strategy included to connect with customers, transform their experience and drive the company. Firstly, they employed Loyalty Program using MyStarbucks App with shop locations, gift, payment and rewards.

Their fan development result got 54 million Facebook fans, 3.4 million Twitter followers, and 900,000 followers on Instagram. Starbuck is the number one ranking among socially enagaged companies. Moreover, My Starbucks Idea site engaged fans by making them speak out.

(3) Customer Data-Mining Strategy
Marketers can make better customer decisions to create and target special offers with precision. Data-mining Strategy allowed the company to scale its personalized and then they could touch a larger group of customers. (So call Mass Markets with VIP Service)

(4) Physical-and-Digital-World Integration Strategy
Good integration should be single view of customer. One World of Burberry (digital & physical) means that customers were about to visit all the different parts of the business as they would do in its HQ.

Lastly, Dr. Lee said 360 Customer Experience was an engaging customer experience created value for both customers and firms. It could drive retention and stimulate customer loyalty.

Before the cross-Industry sharing, Dr. Lee gave us an exercise to find out two most impressive customer-experience strategies and one least impressive experience. And then group discussion was performed.

ASQ InfVoices – Quality Inspiration from My First Research Supervisor

The first topic of ASQ Influence Voices in 2015 was “Finding Inspiration from Quality Leader”. Mr. Bill Troy showed us what he learnt from Mr. Paul O’Neill (former US Secretary of the Treasury) who was a quality throught leader and awarded Juran Medalist in 2013. Then he questioned us “Have you met someone whose teachings on quality influenced you or inspired you? What were these lessons?” and he would like to encourage us to think someone outside the quality field.

The topic let me thinking about my first research supervisor Dr. Ronald Sequeira in the Department of Biology and Chemistry, City University of Hong Kong. My research topic named “Detailed investigations on the inorganic chemical constituents of atmospheric aerosol and various deposition in Hong Kong” which related to air pollution from 1994 to 1997.

(Photo taken in 1997 when I graduated in MPhil)

I would like to share some stories during our dialogue.

1. We always discussed research problems in Chinese Garden and my supervisor were smoking at that time. I asked him a funny joking question “Do you produce more air pollution when you are smoking?” He taught me a scientific word “Scavenging Effect” which could dilute the smoke and particles he produced. (Scientific)

2. There are many mosquitoes in Chinese Garden that I afraid to be bitten. But my supervisor was very calm and still smoking. Mosquitoes did not like smoking smell. I observed one mosquito would like to bit my supervisor, once it closed to his arm and then it was found to be sticking by his hair. The mosquito struggled out of his arm hair and then escaped! (Calm)

3. One day my supervisor asked me what career you would like to do. I replied to be “Consultant”. He then told me to be a good Consultant that you should have at least 10yr experience in any field. (Experience)

4. Dr. Ronald Sequeira always told me that the quality of published paper is more important than quantity of published paper. One of his proud paper named “Monsoonal deposition of sea salt and air pollutants over Bombay (1976)”. (Quality)

In the first dialogue, I learnt that you need to explain phenomena in scientific way that match one of quality principle “Evidence-Based Decision Making”. The second observation is “Calm” that sometime avoids unnecessary fear! The third dialogue my supervisor tell me the TRUTH that Consultant should be experience. In Hong Kong, many consultants (or assistant consultants) are fresh graduate without practical experience! The last dialogue is “Quality is more important than Quantity”. However, University rating for Professor has changed from Quality to Quantity in the past but now they need both Quality and Quantity of publication.

I would like to share some photos showing my research setup in 1995 below.

In collaboration with HKSAR’s initiative on promoting cloud computing solutions targeting SMEs, SME Global Alliance is awarded by OGCIO with the mission to train local SMEs with Cloud Computing. So SME Cloud Promotion Campaign was held on 13 Jan 2015 in Science Park. HKSTPC is one of supporting organizations. The event aims to equip SMEs’ HR management with cloud applications so as to enhance efficient communication and talent acquisition. I only attended the last section and summarized for sharing.

The first speaker was Mr. Uran Choy (Business Development Manager, Towngas Telecommunications Company Limited) and his topic entitled “Into the CLOUD, HOW?”

Few people knew Towngas had telecommunications services. The following diagram introduced the relation among Towngas and TGT.

Then Mr. Choy asked “What CLOUD is it?” He used five words to describe the meaning and they were “Compute Resources Deliver Via Network”. It induced 5 key tips for selecting Cloud Services Provider.
i) Need – To Scale, To respond quickly, To shift risk and cost, To support an emerging company with minimum IT investment
ii) Value – Shit CAPEX to OPEX and release staff for high-value mission project
iii) Defense – 3rd Parties Compliance Audit and built TRUST
iv) Reputation – Size, Services and Experiences
v) Competence – TIA level, ISO 27001, CSA STAR, etc.

Finally, Mr. Choy introduced their cloud service provider named “Aliyun.com (阿里云)”. Then they joined together “Aliyun + TGT” to provide Cloud Computing service and named “ACT Cloud Services” which included Elastic Compute Service (ECS), Server Load Balancer (SLB), Relational Database Service (RDS) and Open Storage Service (OSS).

The second speaker was Mr. Stephen Kwok (VP, Worldwide Sales, Deltapath) and his topic named “Deltapath vicruit™ video-enabled talent acquisition solutions”. Their product aimed using Video to Win the War for Talent.

Human Capital Management video-enabled processes included Talent Acquisition, On-Boarding, Performance Management, Flexible Working and Learning & Development. Moreover, video interviewing is a blessing for recruiters and organizations that care about candidate experience. Finally, Mr. Kwok demonstrated how easy the interview online using their product through cloud computing.

The process of the whole recruitment using Deltapath was shown in the following diagram.

The last speaker was Mr. Kyle Liu (Talent Solution Specialist, LinkedIn) and his presentation was “Social Recruiting with LinkedIn”. He said LinkedIn had grown tremendously in the past few year from >100M member in July 2011 to >330M members in Nov 2014.

He said business and HR leaders across industries around the world shared the same challenge that was very difficult in today’s world to recruit top talents. Since individuals used LinkedIn to better themselves as a professional, companies were able to use LinkedIn as an effective and efficient HR tool. It achieved to increase Quality, Quantity but decrease Time and Cost.

One special feature was Job opportunities automatically matching in the use of LinkedIn technology. At the end, Mr. Kyle Liu used slide “are you In?” as closing. I like this sentence.

HKSQ & ISI Seminar of Innovative Model - iTQI

The seminar entitled "Innovation Model - Innovative Total Quality Improvement (iTQI)" was organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and co-organizer by Institute of Systematic Innovation Hong Kong (ISIHK) on 16th Jan 2015. The aim of this seminar to introduce the first innovation approach being developed in Hong Kong, which combines the teachings of G. Altshuller’s “TRIZ” principles and innovation guru T. Brown’s “People Centered Innovation” theory. The seminar mentioned the new PKIR (問知創行) innovation model that fit well in all sectors of business at all levels.

Dr. Victor Lo (Vice Chairman - Institute of Systematic Innovation, HK) is an expert in both innovation and quality was our guest speaker. Firstly, Dr. Lo reviewed his teaching experience and how to combine industry practice and theory. After he retired, he would like to contribute to the society and introduced Innovation with passion. His statement indicated the relationship between Quality and Innovation.
“Innovation is an alternate way to the usual, familiar way of quality improvements. It is the means to be the quality leader.” (Dr. Victor Lo, 2011)

Then Dr. Lo reviewed “What is Quality?” using different gurus’ explanation and identified Customer Satisfaction was one of most important factors. After that we discussed “What is Innovation?” Dr. Lo quoted The Economist Magazine that Innovation is now recognized as the single most important ingredient in any modern economy. And he also quoted Peter F. Drucker that Every organization – not just business – needs one core competence: Innovation.

BCG report on Innovation 2010 was discussed and he found that innovation rank in Top priority or Top-three priority in company is upto 71% in BCG senior executive innovation surveys. Moreover, the report said 84% of respondents said their company considers innovation an important or extremely important lever in its ability to reap the benefits of an economic recovery. One example was German innovation that recombining elements of old, stagnant sectors into new, vibrant ones.

Then Dr. Lo said that Innovation is Problem Solving. Moreover, he has a dream that iTQI could be a method that would be universally applied in everybody, everywhere, every day and everything. He focused on problem solving and needed three elements included “Management Support”, “Innovation Methodology” and “Knowledgeable Team”. However, everybody are talking about innovation but nobody want to change!

The new PKIR (問知創行) innovation model was introduced where P – Problem identification, K – Knowledge acquisition, I – Ideation and R – Realization with 50 Flash cards, as well as, standing on the shoulders of TRIZ and People Centered Innovation (PCI) giants. Dr. Lo said the most important element in the house was “Mutual Respect”.

The first version of 50 Flash cards was classified by PKIR but the new version would be classified by its functionality.

PKIR is an iterative process of Creativity.
P – Knowing the problem, may be it is too big, split it down to smaller, is it urgent and important?
K – Search & discover the related knowledge for this application
I – Connecting of disparate ideas and discovery of opportunities
R – Application in the feasible adoption of solutions
The following two diagram demonstrated the path of using flash cards. (It is no need to use all 50 Flash cards. It is depended the need of problem.)

Q&A session
Mr. Karson Chui (Former Chairman, HKSQ) asked a question how to observe the result after implement iTQI that was not like other management system which visualized by certification. Dr. Lo said you needed to prepare fail and he used WD40(Water Displacement,40th formula) as example that product failed 39 times and succeed on the 40 times (the name WD40 come from this reason). Then Peter introduced the coming Workshop named “Innovation Total Quality Improvement Workshop” on 7 Feb 2015.

Finally, Mr. Peter Fung (Vice Chairman, HKSQ) presented a souvenir to Dr. Victor Lo.

The seminar entitled "System Apprach to Innovation Management – Sustaining Excellence equal to Quality plus Innovation" was organized by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) and co-organizer by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) on 24th Jan 2015. The aim of this seminar to introduce the first Innovation Management System standard, Design for Six Sigma and Innovative Tools in systematic way. Before the seminar, whole HKSQ team members took a photo for memory.
(Left: Ms. Minda Chiang (Hon. Secretary), I (Former Chairman), Mr. Simon Tong (Coop member), Mr. Peter Fung (Chairman) and Mr. Vincent Cheng (Former Exco member))

Before the seminar, Mr. Peter Fung (Chairman, HKSQ) introduced some background of Hong Kong Society for Quality to our participants.

I was the first speaker and my topic entitled “Integration of Quality and Innovation Management System”. My content included introduction of ISO 9001:2015 (DIS) and CEN/TS 16555-1:2013 Innovation Management System. In the beginning, I defined a simple definition of Quality & Innovation Management System (QInnoMS) that is a set of elements of an organization’s management system for making better things better.

I briefed a new ISO 9001 standard which followed high level structure under a new ISO Directive Part 1:2012 “Annex SL”; and its some changes such as added risk and opportunity, as well as, enhance top management responsibility.  Then I introduced the first standard on Innovation Management System (CEN/TS 16555-1:2013). I was first person to introduce this standard in Hong Kong. This Technical Specification was approved by European Committee for Standardization (CEN)* on 21 April 2013 (issued in July 2013).

The model of Innovation Management System (InnoMS) employed PDCA cycle and idea tunnel. It also adopted the ISO Directive Part 1:2012 “Annex SL” structure included “Context of the Organization”, “Leadership for Innovation”, “Planning for Innovation Success”, “Innovation Enabling Factors”, “Innovation Management Process”, “Assessment”, “Improvement” and “Innovation Management Techniques”. Where the Innovation Funnel with different aspects included framing and insight generation, idea management, develop of the innovation project, protection & exploitation of outcome and market introduction.

The last part of my presentation was integrated ISO 9001:2015 (DIS) and CEN/TS 16555-1. It was found that many clauses were similar and could be integrated. The different clauses in CEN/TS 16555-1 from ISO 9001 were Innovation Management Process and Innovation Management Techniques.

Finally, I showed the overall model which combined ISO 9001:2015 model and CEN/TS 16555-1’s Innovation Funnel with Innovation Management Techniques. Then I demonstrated one of cases I employed in Technology Support Centre using TRIZ for sharing.

Mr. Peter Fung (Chairman, HKSQ) was the second speaker and his topic named “Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) Introduction”. First, he surveyed how many participants had experience on Six Sigma and DFSS. It observed little participants had experience in DFSS. He said that DFSS used to help you to deliver better products and services that your customers want and willing to pay for.

Then Peter used Pizza Express as example to explain what situation we employed Six Sigma or DFSS. He said Six Sigma used for improvement but DFSS used for new design of product or service (when improvement was not able to solve the problem). Then he briefed the steps of DFSS included Define (project), Measure, Analyze, Design & Verify (DMADV).

There were many tools which used in DMADV as follows:
D – VOC, QFD, Kano Model
M – Benchmarking, Capability Performance
A – TRIZ & Process Simulation
D – FMEA & DOE
V – SPC & Process Management
At the end he quoted Philip B Crosby’s Cost of Poor Quality Philosophy statement “Quality is free. It is not a gift, but it is free.” And he modified to “DFSS is free. It is not a gift, but it is free.” as Philosophy on Cost of Poor Design.

Mr. Simon Tong (Coop Member, Innovation Sub-Committee, HKSQ) was the last speaker and his topic presentation was “Innovation? Management? System? Yes Innovation Management System”. Firstly, Simon asked some questions “Can Innovation be systematic?” and “Does Management kill Innovation?” Then he used his teacher Mr. Darrell Mann’s answer “It Depends”.

Then he discussed management hierarchy from “Strategies, Business Models” to “System, Policy and Procedure”. (Simply, Philosophy to Methodology to Tools). He found that Innovation had philosophy and Tools (e.g. TRIZ, Design Thinking, UX, etc), but lack of systems to implement those tools. Then he proposed using the framework of Project Management Professional (PMP) to facilitate system approach innovation management.

After that Simon introduced Innovation Capability Maturity Model (ICMM) and there were five levels included “Seeding”, “Championing”, “Managing”, “Strategizing” and “Venturing”. It indicated from process innovation to societal innovation.

Simon questioned us “How to capture future market needs?” Then he introduced us another set of tools from TrendNA which could predict future market trends!

Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) and Alibaba Hong Kong co-organized a seminar named “B2B Export E-commerce Business Tips and Successful Case Sharing” on 29 Jan 2015 in Science Park. As e-Commerce platforms increasingly increasingly mature, SMEs with limited resources can make use of the low-cost but highly effective platforms for developing their businesses. The seminar aimed to introduce the latest business trend of B2B e-Commerce and the best economic useful operational tips to technology companies in Science Park. The summary was showed below for sharing. Before the seminar, we took a group photo for memory.

(Left: Mr. Antony Kwong (Assistant Mgr, Marketing, HKSTP), Mr. Terry Kwok (Senior Account Manager, Alibaba.com), Mr. Jeffrey Lam (Vice-President, Hong Kong Netrepreneurs Association) and I)

In the beginning, Mr. Terry Kwok (Senior Account Manager) requested all participants standup and asked who contacted or used B2B or B2C platforms. Then only few participants had experience on those platforms.

Terry changed the presentation style to invite Mr. Jeffrey Lam (General Manager, EPR International Co. Ltd.) as interviewee for sharing his experience. Jeffrey had established his company in United Kingdom (Loughborough) since 2004. It started selling product via online platform. But he used Alibaba for advertisement in 2006 because of free. The, he found the method to improve this online tools and won Alibaba Gold Supplier since 2007.

Then Terry asked Jeffrey to share his experience on six online platforms. Jeffrey said eBay had steady publicity and most USA local users for B2C. But eBay’s rule and regulation were tightly and higher charge, moreover, you had better have oversea warehouse. DHgate.com was also high publicity but it changed from B2B to B2C. It was observed the sale was going down but Jeffrey still used. Since it charged per transaction, no transaction was free. The global sources, Made-in-China.com and Aliababa.com were B2B platform. However, Jeffrey said Alibaba had a function to link all his companies into one platform and got the synergy effect.

Some participants asked how to manage so many platforms. Jeffrey said 2 companies per platform and No sales were employed but platform operators/analyst were employed to handle the order form the platform. Moreover, he shared that social media was then employed for local market (HK – B2C). Because social media (e.g. facebook) used to promote and advertise that was the easier way to spread out the word and best way for user to share their buying experience and also for them to ‘show off’. Then Jerry shared his company pages in Alibaba platform and we found some interested items such as their team’s cute style photos.

Some key points on e-commerce were shared as followings:
- Sell photo not the product (e.g. special photo frame)
- Product description
- Platform look (comfortable and reliable)
For Platform look, Jeffrey said most people looked it from top to the bottom.
Then Jeffrey summarized rules for using online B2B platform as below:
1. The most important item posted first.
2. Differentiation
3. Cross-link
4. Photo-frame

Terry added that there were four phase using Alibaba platform.
Phase 1 – Exposure (Jeffrey case had 600,000 per month)
Phase 2 – Click (It had 3000 to 6000 click per month (~5-10%)
Phase 3 – Enquiry (About 300 enquiry per month)
Phase 4 – Order (It depends on staff. If Jeffrey took the enquiry, it could be upto 95%!)
Jeffrey also give use a tip that the last statement of your reply should be “?” mark, so customer return rate would be increased.

At the end, Terry shared Alibaba e-commerce business tips again. He briefed Alibaba services including Taobao.com (淘寶網), Tmall.com (天貓), Juhuasuan.com (聚划算), Aliexpress (全球速賣通), Alibaba.com (阿里巴巴) and 1688.com (1688).

Then he asked if you want to exposure your product to the world, Alibaba’s multi-language function could help. How do you know your business success in the platform? The data analysis could help to analysis and trace buyers’ behaviors. Moreover, you could find buyer proactively through buyer order platform.

Finally, I presented souvenir to Mr. Terry Kwok and Mr. Jeffrey Lam.

I met Mr. Albert K.P. Leung (Business Development Manager) from Hong Kong Cosmetic Technical Resources Centre which was jointly founded by CMA Testing and Certification Laboratories (CMA Testing) and International Cosmetics (Asia Pacific) Joint Development Centre. We took a photo for memory.

I remember Mr. Lam’s old song also named “Alibaba”

HKSQ exco members (Peter, Simon, Minda and I) attended the Institute of Systematic Innovation, HK (ISI) Winter Networking on 30 Jan 2015 in University of Hong Kong. Dr. Michael Li welcomed us and briefed some new activities in the coming year. The most important event was “The 6th International Conference on Systematic Innovation (ICSI) & The 5th Global Competition on Systematic Innovation (GCSI)” would be held on 15-17 July 2015 in Hong Kong.

The first speaker was Mr. Herbert Lee (Director, ISIHK) and his topic entitled "How to re-sharpen winning edges from those days – Never Say Never". He would like to share two cases to us. The first case was how to prolonging service live of machine by strengthening some mechanical transmission parts. A 12-year-old filling machine needed to run full speed and long hours in daily production (900 bottles / hour). Every 4 screws needed to carry about 1000kg up & down for more than 250 times a day!

Herbert said 6 sigma was able to help to find out the problem and reason but missing how to solute it. However, TRIZ could give a thinking direction to find the solution.

The following table demonstrated how to use TRIZ contradiction table to identify the useful innovation principle so as to extend the service life of screws & nuts. After implemented the new double nuts, less spare parts consumed, less OT paid for labor due to down time and more production hours. The ROI was about 6 months.

Herbert shared the second case was how to re-arrange water distribution system for drastic fluctuation of cooling water demand. Some problems included poor pipe work created unnecessary & unevenly back pressure to some plants, poor cooling effect in some towers and difficult to control water temperature, etc. After the new arrangement, some improvements by automatic control were identified. The ROI estimated to be 3yr. Finally, he concluded “We do not have to live with the pain inherited from history. Our destiny is on our hand & bright future is ahead.”

Mr. Roy Tse (ISI) was the second speaker and his presentation named "My A, B, C, D View of INNOVATION". He shared his innovation through Ambition, Bravery, Career and Dream. He said “Innovation is a new idea, method or invention.”

Firstly, Roy explained “A stands for Ambition” which is the determination to be successful, rich & powerful, etc; and a strong desire to achieve something. Then B stands for Bravery which was actions, behavior, or an attitude that shows courage and confidence. He used two persons “Hitler” and “Einstein” to explain only having Ambition or Bravery but without Innovation, the result was so different. But Innovation usually needs Bravery!

Then Roy shared his Career. (Career means “A job or profession that you have been trained for and intend to do for several years.”). He also introduced the Dream “Something you hope for and want to happen very much”.
Finally, Roy concluded the sequence of ABCD should be D>A>B>C>D(A).

At the end, we took a group photo for memory.
